Zhangjiakou: China’s Best-Kept Secret 1 Hour From Beijing

Many visitors to China never leave Beijing. Just 200 kilometres north-west sits Zhangjiakou, a Hebei city packed with surprises. We’re talking Olympic ski mountains, farm-field yoga, and villages that inspired a hit video game. Best of all, it costs a fraction of a big-city trip.

So what is Village Voyage?

The buzz started with a TV show. In season three of Village Voyage, CGTN host Julian Waghann and Mexican traveller Juan Carlos Cheang Guzmán crossed Zhangjiakou with open eyes and muddy shoes. They biked forest trails, kneaded oat dough, and shared bonfires with local families. No five-star hotels. No velvet ropes. Just real villages, real food, and real people. That is exactly why it works for budget travellers. You don’t just look at rural China here. You live it.

Chongli: where Olympic slopes become summer trails

The mountains of Chongli hosted events during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Skiers know them well. locals insist the hills shine brighter after the snow melts. “Winter is for skiing, but summer opens up a whole new world,” one outdoor guide said. Since the Games, residents have unlocked year-round adventures. Think mountain biking, trail running, hiking, and camping. The Chongli 168 Ultra-Trail Race draws thousands of runners each year. Juan, who joined from Mexico, felt right at home on the starting line.

“Mountains don’t have borders,” he said. “The urge to run and challenge yourself in the wild is something we share.”

Yugouliang Village: yoga that grew from farm work

High on a plateau north of Zhangjiakou sits Yugouliang Village. There are no spas here. No studio mirrors. Just open fields and big sky.Villagers practice yoga right among the crops. This is no imported wellness trend. It grew naturally out of daily farm life.”Our yoga comes from farm work,” one villager explained. “It is part of how we live.” Between planting and harvesting, residents stretch, breathe, and find stillness in the fields. Visitors can join in for little or no cost. First, learn to make youmian, the local oat staple. Knead the dough and shape it by hand. Then roll out your mat beside the crops. Juan’s takeaway says it all. “No matter where we are, people want the same things — health, peace, security and a life that feels full.”

Yuxian County: ancient villages gamers already love

Head south to Yuxian County for a trip back in time. Historic settlements, traditional architecture, and folk arts fill the region. Some buildings here inspired locations in Black Myth: Wukong, the hit Chinese action RPG. Gamers, take note. The county’s most famous craft is paper-cutting. Masters snip red paper into intricate window decorations. “Paper-cutting came from everyday people,” one master said. “It used to decorate farmhouse windows. Now it reaches the wider world.” You can try it yourself. Expect clumsy first attempts. Even so, you’ll take home a souvenir no gift shop can match.

Desheng Village: solar panels and sweet tomatoes

Want to see rural China’s future? Visit Desheng Village.Rows of solar panels stretch across the highland farmland. Beneath them, modern greenhouses run with temperature-controlled precision.

“We used to depend heavily on the weather,” one villager said. “Now technology and sunlight give us new hope. ” Step inside the greenhouses and pick ripe tomatoes and crisp cucumbers. Taste a harvest that no longer depends on luck. Clean energy revenue flows back into the community. It funds schools, roads, and public spaces. When night falls, join the bonfire in the village square. Music and laughter fill the air. This is rural life, upgraded — without losing its soul.
