Macau Captivates Madrid: A Cultural Bridge Between Europe and Asia
For five vibrant days in the heart of Madrid, Macau transformed one of the Spanish capital’s most iconic public spaces into a gateway to Asia. Through the spectacular “Experience Macao Roadshow in Madrid,” the Macao SAR Government delivered far more than a tourism campaign — it presented Macau as a world-class lifestyle destination where culture, gastronomy, luxury, heritage, and innovation exist in perfect harmony.
Held from 17 to 21 April at Puente del Rey, one of Madrid’s most picturesque locations, the large-scale promotional event marked the first major Macau roadshow ever hosted in Spain. Designed to strengthen cultural and tourism ties between China, Macau, and the Spanish-speaking world, the initiative highlighted Macau’s growing international appeal and its unique role as a bridge between East and West.
The event culminated in the dazzling “Macao Night,” attended by distinguished guests including Chief Executive of the Macao SAR Sam Hou Fai, Secretary-General of UN Tourism Shaikha Al Nuwais, Chinese Ambassador to Spain and Andorra Yao Jing, and Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, alongside representatives from tourism, culture, trade, media, and business sectors from both Macau and Spain.

A Destination Experiencing Global Momentum
Macau’s presence in Madrid reflected the destination’s growing success on the international stage. According to MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Macau welcomed more than 40 million visitors in 2025, with international arrivals from Spain and Europe recording double-digit growth.
The roadshow formed part of Macau’s broader strategy to strengthen connections with European markets, particularly Spain, through tourism promotion, gastronomy collaborations, trade partnerships, and cultural diplomacy. The initiative also reinforced Macau’s strategic importance as the only region in the world where Chinese and Portuguese are official languages — a distinctive identity that continues to attract travelers seeking authentic multicultural experiences.
Chinese Ambassador Yao Jing emphasized the close historical and cultural ties between China and Spain, describing Macau as a platform that connects China with Portuguese-speaking countries while serving as a symbol of cultural dialogue and international cooperation.

Why Macau Fascinates European Travelers
For Spanish and European travelers, Macau offers something increasingly rare in global tourism: a destination capable of delivering completely different worlds within a single journey.
Visitors can wander through UNESCO World Heritage streets lined with pastel-colored Portuguese colonial architecture before stepping into futuristic entertainment resorts filled with Michelin-starred restaurants, luxury shopping, contemporary art, and world-class performances. This coexistence between heritage and modernity defines Macau’s unmistakable personality.
At the heart of the city lies Senado Square, where Portuguese pavement mosaics, historic churches, and lively cafés evoke the atmosphere of Southern Europe while remaining deeply connected to Chinese traditions. Nearby, the iconic Ruins of St. Paul’s stand as one of Asia’s most recognizable landmarks — a symbol of Macau’s centuries-long cultural fusion.
Yet Macau is far more than a historical destination. Travelers can also experience luxury integrated resorts, internationally acclaimed wellness experiences, rooftop dining, live entertainment, and major sporting events including the legendary Macau Grand Prix.
Gastronomy: The Soul of Macau
One of the strongest pillars of Macau’s tourism promotion in Madrid was gastronomy — and for good reason.
Recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Macau offers one of the most distinctive culinary identities in Asia. Macanese cuisine, considered one of the world’s earliest fusion cuisines, blends Portuguese flavors with Cantonese, African, Indian, and Southeast Asian influences.
To showcase this gastronomic heritage, the “China Taste – Macao Flavour” initiative brought Macau-inspired menus to several popular Madrid restaurants including Soy Kitchen, Lamian, and TRIPEA. Particularly notable was Soy Kitchen, a contemporary Chinese fusion restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide Spain 2026, where Head Chef Julio Zhang created a special Macau-inspired menu following his visit to Macau earlier this year during the “2026 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao.”
For travelers, food becomes one of the most memorable parts of the Macau experience. From traditional Portuguese egg tarts and African chicken to refined Michelin-starred tasting menus, every meal tells the story of Macau’s multicultural identity.

A Destination Designed for Experiences
The Madrid roadshow itself reflected the immersive spirit of Macau tourism. Four themed exhibition zones introduced visitors to Macau’s tourism industry, cultural attractions, lifestyle offerings, government initiatives, and travel experiences through interactive displays, live performances, and digital activations.
Global social media personality Khaby Lame — one of TikTok’s most-followed creators with more than 160 million followers — also joined the event after attending the “2026 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” earlier this year. His participation helped amplify Macau’s image to younger international audiences through social media engagement and live interactions in Madrid.
Alongside the public-facing events, Macau tourism officials and industry representatives conducted networking sessions with Spanish travel agencies and tourism professionals to promote both standalone Macau travel and multi-destination Asian itineraries incorporating the Greater Bay Area and mainland China.
Macau: More Than a Trip, A Lifetime Experience
What makes Macau truly exceptional is not simply its attractions, but the emotional experience it offers travelers.
It is a place where ancient temples stand beside modern skyscrapers, where Portuguese and Chinese cultures naturally intertwine, where travelers can discover luxury, spirituality, gastronomy, history, entertainment, and human connection all within a compact and walkable destination.
For many visitors, Macau becomes more than a holiday destination — it becomes a sensory journey through cultures, flavors, traditions, and stories unlike anywhere else in the world.
As Macau continues expanding its international tourism presence across Europe, initiatives like the “Experience Macao Roadshow in Madrid” demonstrate the city’s ambition to position itself not only as Asia’s entertainment capital, but as one of the world’s most unique and unforgettable travel experiences.
For Spanish and European travellers seeking authenticity, sophistication, and cultural discovery, Macau is no longer simply a destination to visit — it is a destination to feel, explore, and remember for a lifetime.
